Cubs’ Catching Carousel: Amaya Hits IL, McGuire Steps Up with Heroic Debut

The Chicago Cubs have placed catcher Miguel Amaya on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain sustained during a throw to second base in Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. Amaya, who has been a key contributor with a .280 batting average, four home runs, and 25 RBIs over 27 games this season, will undergo imaging in Chicago on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. With Amaya sidelined, Carson Kelly is expected to assume the majority of catching duties.

In response to Amaya’s injury, the Cubs have called up veteran catcher Reese McGuire from Triple-A Iowa. McGuire, who signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in January, brings experience from 355 MLB games with the Blue Jays, White Sox, and Red Sox, holding a career .252 batting average. At Triple-A Iowa, he was performing well, batting .280 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 22 games. No additional 40-man roster move was required for McGuire’s promotion, as a spot was already available following recent roster adjustments.

McGuire made an immediate impact in his Cubs debut on Sunday, hitting two home runs in an 11-8 comeback victory over the Reds. His first homer came in the second inning off Reds starter Nick Lodolo, and he tied the game in the eighth with another solo shot off reliever Taylor Rogers. This performance marked the first multi-homer game of McGuire’s career and played a pivotal role in the Cubs’ largest comeback win of the 2025 season.
