Head coach Sherrone Moore made a daring decision by selecting five-star freshman Bryce Underwood as the starting quarterback for the 2025 campaign, ushering in a new era for Michigan football. The best recruit in the country, Underwood, a dual-threat player from Belleville, Michigan, switched his pledge from LSU to Michigan in November 2024, allegedly following a $10.5 million NIL agreement.

Underwood’s hiring was historic for Michigan because it was the first time the Wolverines had landed the top recruit in the country since 2016. NFL icon Tom Brady, who personally coached Underwood during the recruiting process, was among the fans and alumni who found resonance in his decision to remain at home.

Underwood, who stands 6’4″ and weighs 214 pounds, is a frightening presence on the field thanks to his strong arm and remarkable mobility. He has demonstrated maturity and poise despite only being a freshman, qualities that have earned him the starting position.

During Michigan’s spring game, Underwood showed his strengths and weaknesses. He completed 187 yards on 12 of 25 passes, including an incredible 88-yard touchdown pass. His ability to bounce back and create plays under duress was clear, despite some early-game jitters.

Underwood is expected to perform well, and some analysts believe Michigan should build their offense around his skills. Underwood has the resources to get Michigan back into the running for a national championship with a redesigned offensive line and an enhanced receiver corps.
