Fans of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs believe that this moment may go on forever because it very well could. Dynamic playmaker Matt Burton signed a historic five-year contract extension with the blue and white in early January 2023, thus binding him to the team for the remainder of his playing days.
Burton, who was 22 at the time and had already won a premiership with Penrith in 2021, quickly established himself as a mainstay of the Bulldogs. He played in every game during his first season, quickly winning the Members’ Player of the Year award and winning over the fans.
Burton quickly became the long-term No. 6 for a team looking to return to the championships with his trademark bomb kicks, cool game management, and brilliant playmaking.
Securing Burton’s future was a declaration of intent for the Bulldogs, not just a way to hold onto talent. John Khoury, the chairman, highlighted how this agreement strengthened their goals, pointing “towards a vision of success and stability.” In agreement, CEO Aaron Warburton hailed Burton as a “ambassador” whose arrival heralds a new era of expansion.
Canterbury -Bankstown Bulldogs One important element was Burton’s connection with his Penrith mentor, coach Cameron Ciraldo. Burton was thrilled about the reconnection and said he was looking forward to improving even more under Ciraldo’s tutelage.
Fans may relax knowing that Burton will remain at Belmore until at least the end of 2027, if he doesn’t retire, as the 2025 season progresses. This is a cornerstone, not merely a contract. With Burton leading the charge, the Bulldogs are not only rebuilding but also daring to dream. They have set the groundwork for a reconstruction. Cheers to the future!
