Savannah, GA – August 27, 2025* – Savannah State University is excited to announce the return of alumnus Phillip Wallace, Jr. as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program. This appointment comes as the university aims to revitalize its athletics department and enhance the competitiveness of its women’s basketball team within the NCAA Division II landscape.

 

Wallace, who graduated from Savannah State in 2010 with a degree in Sports Management, has made significant strides in his coaching career since leaving the university. His journey has taken him through various collegiate programs, where he has accumulated extensive coaching experience, most recently serving as an assistant coach at a well-renowned NCAA Division I program. His varied coaching experiences and dedication to athlete development position him uniquely to lead the Lady Tigers into a new era.

 

“I am thrilled to return to Savannah State, a place that holds a special spot in my heart,” Wallace expressed during his introductory press conference. “I’ve seen firsthand the potential of women’s basketball at this institution, and I am committed to building a program that reflects the competitive spirit and excellence that Savannah State is known for.”
