Done deal: Phillies  sign $31 million All-Star ace to replace Ranger Suarez, hold the line until Zack Wheeler’s return

With the loss of Ranger Suarez, and Zack Wheeler starting the season on the IL, the Philadelphia Phillies’ rotation is in shambles. While they still have Cristopher Sanchez, he’s going to need some help.

Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes the answer to that problem is getting a solid starter that can eat innings and win games more often than not, and predicts the Phillies sign All-Star Chris Bassitt.

Whiffing on Bo Bichette set the Philadelphia Phillies back a lot. There is no clear path to a major lineup upgrade at this point, meaning Dave Dombrowski probably turns his attention to fine-tuning the rotation. Philadelphia needs someone to eat innings while Zack Wheeler rehabs his elbow. Bassitt, 36, has made his reputation on durability. He still misses barrels with a healthy mix of off-speed pitches, and he can move into a bullpen role if such a need arises, too,” Kline wrote.

This past season, Bassitt posted an 11-9 record, a 3.96 ERA, 166 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.327 over 170 innings pitched. He would hold the line until Wheeler’s return, and then act as a solid middle-to-end-of-rotation starter for the Phillies.

He would also be relatively cheap. The projection for his services is two-years, $31 million, and for the Phillies, this would be great. It would give them a solid starter, and allow for them to spend big next offseason on a true superstar.

The Phillies are running out of options, so hopefully they realize this could be a good move.
