
Yesterday, on his 33rd birthday, C.J. Mosley, the tall linebacker whose football career started at the University of Alabama and ended with a stellar NFL career, formally announced his retirement from professional sports. Mosley, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, emerged as one of the league’s most important defensive players and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2014, 2016–2018, and 2022. and 2022
Mosley’s play was characterized by consistency, intelligence, and tenacity throughout his stellar collegiate career, which included two BCS national titles and the 2013 Butkus Award. In his career, he recorded more than 1,083 tackles, 12 sacks, and 12 interceptions. He led and performed well during his six seasons with the New York Jets.
Mosley overcame early difficulties, including a groin injury sustained during his 2019 debut and his decision to opt out in 2020 due to the pandemic. He returned to the Pro Bowl in 2022 after recording consecutive seasons with 150 or more tackles and winning team MVP in 2021.
He played in just four games in 2024 due to injuries, including a toe problem and a bulging disc in his spine. Mosley decided to leave the game after being cut loose by the Jets and having no other NFL options. Mosley recalled in an emotional Instagram post: “Once upon a time, a youngster from Mobile, Ala., had a dream… It’s time to awaken from my childhood fantasy and pass it on to the next generation today.
As Mosley ends this chapter, his incredible path from Crimson Tide star to NFL mainstay is evidence of his talent, fortitude, and leadership. Beyond football, retirement is only the start of a new legacy.
