
In the past, Hubert Davis has likened the transfer portal to free agency, an offseason when athletes have all the cards and are not penalized by having to sit out a year if they decide to leave programs because of COVID. They are free to pursue their talents elsewhere if their current circumstances do not immediately satisfy them.
Ten players—eleven if you add the most recent from this season—have been lured into the transfer portal during Hubert’s stint as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in search of better opportunities, greater playing time, and greener grass. The 6′! Due to family matters, Minnesotan departed UNC in the middle of the 2022 season. This must have been the case because he eventually enrolled at the University of Minnesota, which is near to home. He led the squad in scoring (17.6 points per game) and rebounds (6.7 per game), so it appears to have worked out well for him. The Golden Gophers, however, lost to Indiana State in the second round of the NIT and missed the Big Dance. Harris, Anthony
During his brief tenure as a Tar Heel, the young guard shown glimpses, but his career was marred by injury. Harris eventually moved to Rhode Island, where his academic difficulties have prevented him from enrolling fully. He didn’t play in 2022–2023 or 2023–2024, and it’s unknown what his future holds. I hope he’ll be able to return to the court and classroom soon.
