Hershey, PA – August 26, 2025* – The Hershey Bears, one of the most storied franchises in American Hockey League (AHL) history, have announced the appointment of their new head coach following the recent departure of Todd Nelson to the Pittsburgh Penguins as an assistant coach. The announcement, made during a press conference at Giant Center, introduces veteran coach Dave Richards as the 28th head coach in the franchise’s history.

 

Richards, who comes to Hershey with a distinguished coaching pedigree, previously served as head coach for the Central Hockey League’s Texas Brahmas, leading them to multiple playoff appearances, and spent time in the ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads. His extensive experience, particularly in player development, is expected to bolster a Bears team that is ambitious about returning to its championship-winning ways.

 

“Today marks a new chapter for the Hershey Bears, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Dave Richards as our head coach,” said Bears’ President of Hockey Operations, Scott Stuccio. “His track record of developing young talent and competitive teams aligns perfectly with our goals here in Hershey. The decision comes just over six weeks after Todd Nelson’s exit from the Bears, a move that shook the franchise’s foundations. Nelson, who held the head coaching position for three seasons, achieved notable success, steering the team to a playoff berth each year and earning accolades for his strategic acumen and the development of numerous players who advanced to NHL rosters. His departure for the Penguins was seen as a significant career milestone and has left large shoes to fill in Hershey.
