Jermaine Jenas apologies after posting criticism about referee Rob Jones

Jermaine Jenas, a football analyst, has expressed regret for criticizing referee Rob Jones, claiming that Jones “got it wrong.”

After Jones gave Arsenal a penalty in Sunday’s draw in the north London derby, Jenas tweeted an expletive and the phrase “they’re [referees] all ruining our game” in addition to using an offensive epithet.

Refereeing organizations had criticized the former England midfielder.

“My emotions got the better of me and I apologise to The FA and to all match officials,” Jenas wrote on X.

Prior to the start of the 2023–24 season, Jenas, an ex-Tottenham player, participated in the Football Association’s ‘Love Football, Protect the Game’ campaign.

In 2021, Jenas also served as the host of a Channel 4 documentary that followed the surge in online harassment of black players and featured a troll interview.

Jenas, who co-hosts The One Show, wrote in a post on Monday afternoon, “I lift my hands up, I got it wrong yesterday. I should be more aware than most of our obligations as spectators, participants, and commentators, as well as the potential effects of our statements on social media.

When the ball struck Tottenham defender Cristian Romero’s arm, referee Jones did not give a penalty, but the video assistant referee persuaded him to reevaluate the situation on the pitchside monitor, and he changed his mind.

Paul Field, president of the Referees’ Association, expressed his “great disappointment” at Jenas’ opening statement.

“This kind of thing makes a referee’s job much harder at grassroots levels,” Field continued. We anticipate an apology from Mr. Jenas soon. He owes the game a debt of gratitude.

Ref Support UK, a charity, responded to Jenas’ initial social media post by saying: “This is a horrible tweet, and you should be ashamed. Your tweet encourages referee abuse online, and given your status on television, your bosses should shake their heads.

“Remember that because of your antics, Anthony Taylor and his family were attacked at an airport.”

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the organization that represents referees, has announced that this season, Match Officials: Mic’d Up, a TV program hosted by PGMOL Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb, will regularly provide in-game audio of on-field officials and VAR teams.

In the first episode, which aired on September 5, Webb and ex-Premier League striker Michael Owen discussed six contentious events during the first few weeks of 2023–24.

Hundreds of grassroots referees are concerned for their safety and frustrated with the present abuse prevention strategies, according to a BBC investigation earlier this year.

A survey of more than 900 referees in England by Radio 5 Live revealed that 293 of them had experienced physical violence from fans, athletes, coaches, or management. Other referees reported being punched, headbutted, and spit upon.
