Celtic boss explains why he was angry with players.

SS Lazio v Celtic FC: Group E - UEFA Champions League 2023/24

Celtic have been unimpressive in the majority of their recent games. They lost in midweek to Lazio and dropped points last weekend against Motherwell. Naturally, fans would have been hoping for a reaction in the St Johnstone match but what they got in the first half was another uninspired display instead.

Celtic went into the break a goal down and looked like a team that had run out of ideas already. The Hoops might be leading the Premiership title race but they cannot afford to keep dropping points.

Fortunately, they did not this time around. Celtic came back from behind to score three goals in the second half and sealed a 3-1 win over St Johnstone. Most fans were not happy with the performance but they will certainly take home maximum points.

Rodgers has admitted that he was not happy at half-time. As reported by Football Scotland, the Celtic manager told Sky Sports:

“It was probably the angriest I’ve ever been at half-time in my career as a manager. First half was not this club, the intent, the mentality, too comfortable and second half was much more of what I would expect. Callum McGregor his goal, it just felt like it was coming, but it sparked the reaction so in the second half we were at what I would expect us to be.”

Rodgers certainly was successful in getting a better performance out of his team after the break. But one would think that the uninspiring displays in recent times will concern him.

There does not seem to be any freshness about this team at the moment. It feels like they are just going through the motions and have never really gotten out of second gear this season.

One of the biggest reasons Celtic are still top of the league table is because the Rangers have been struggling themselves. If the Ibrox club had been in form, things might have looked a lot different than they do now.

That is why the upcoming January transfer window is very important. The Hoops must bring in some much-needed quality in the winter. Players who fit Rodgers’ system and are ready to make an impact from the get-go.
