Coming deal: Celtic will trade a Shining Star…

Manager confirms Celtic target is in transfer talks.

Celtic are expected to make additions to their squad in the January transfer window after an underwhelming first half of the season and an even more disappointing run of form over the past month or so. So, fans are hoping that some players arrive next month who can come in and make an impact immediately.

Celtic have signed three players from the K-League this year. The moves have not really worked out so far though.

Oh Hyeon-gyu has remained the cover striker throughout and while he has potential, he is yet to find the consistency required to be the main centre-forward for Celtic. Yang Hyun-jun has got some chances and shown flashes of quality but overall, he is not quite ready yet. And Kwon Hyeok-kyu has not played a single minute of football since his summer arrival.

That does not seem to be stopping Celtic from scouting K-League players though. Jung Ho-Yeon could become the next South Korean player to join the club.

Manager confirms Celtic target is in transfer talks

As reported by the Daily Record, when asked about interest from Celtic, Gwangju FC boss Lee Jung-Hyo told Donga:

Jung is a 23-year-old midfielder, who has been an integral part of Gwangju FC’s team in recent times as they finished third in the K-League. It remains to be seen if a move to Celtic ends up materialising or not. The links have existed for quite some time now.

Interestingly, Cho Gue-sung is another player Celtic were linked with. He had risen to prominence while representing South Korea at the 2022 World Cup. But a move to Parkhead did not materialise and they ended up signing Oh instead.

Celtic FC v Rangers FC - Cinch Scottish Premiership

Celtic finished 2023 in the best manner possible, with a win over the Rangers at Parkhead. Many people had written Brendan Rodgers’ side off coming into the game due to their disappointing recent form. But when the pressure was on, the Hoops rose to the occasion once again while the Ibrox club’s Glasgow Derby record shows no signs of improving.

Both of Celtic’s goals on the day were absolutely world-class. The opener came from Paulo Bernardo, who after a slow start to life at Parkhead, is now starting to show his quality. On the other hand, Kyogo scored a brilliant goal as well.

With a Glasgow Derby win in the bag, the focus will now turn towards the January transfer window. The Hoops might have won against the Rangers, but they still have a lot of room for improvement and need to make signings.

Left-back is an area where they could do with reinforcements. Tiago Araujo is someone they have been linked with in that regard and some of his recent social media activity has certainly been interesting.

Celtic transfer target raises speculation with Instagram comment

Bernardo made a celebratory post on Instagram following the Glasgow Derby win. And Araujo commented ‘Have you scored yet?’ accompanied by three emojis.

Thus, Araujo seems to be keeping an eye on how things are going for Celtic. Of course, it could just be a matter of him keeping up with his old teammates. Both him and Bernardo did come up through the youth ranks at Benfica.

Still, Araujo’s comment on Bernardo’s post has certainly created more speculation about the Portuguese left-back moving to Celtic in January. He currently plays for Estoril and it is believed that it could take a transfer fee around £4 million to sign him. Let’s see if the Hoops make a move or not.
