Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was noncommittal on retaining head coach Mike McCarthy following their team’s NFC East-clinching win over the Washington Commanders Sunday. The Cowboys thumped the Washington Commanders to capture the number two seed in the NFC.

They will play the Green Bay Packers next Sunday afternoon. And the matchup with McCarthy’s former team could be a catalyst for his ouster in Dallas.

According to Clarence Hill Jr. with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reporters asked Jones about McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys. Jones said he’d see how “each game” in the playoffs goes.

Jones’ statement coincides with another significant report from the weekend. Adam Schefter with ESPN wrote Saturday the Cowboys would retain McCarthy if his team performed well in the postseason:

Will the Green Bay Packers knock McCarthy out of a job again?

Losing to the Packers next Sunday would be embarrassing for McCarthy and the Cowboys. The Packers snuck into the playoffs after a slow start this season. The Cowboys should be contenders to reach the Super Bowl.

However, Packers fans have seen this show before with McCarthy. McCarthy had a 125-77-2 record as the head coach of the Packers. He went 10-8 in the postseason. They’re not bad numbers, but the way the Packers lost playoff games with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers was frustrating enough that they parted ways with him after the 2018 season.

McCarthy, who has a 42-25 regular season record with the Cowboys, has a similar winning percentage (.621) with the Cowboys as he had with the Packers (.618). But his 1-2 record in the playoffs with the Cowboys (two losses to the San Francisco 49ers) won’t make Jones happy in Dallas.

Will the Packers play a factor in McCarthy getting fired twice by upsetting the Cowboys in Dallas next week?
