Chuma Edoga, Offensive Lineman
The departure of Tyron Smith is a significant blow.
In a pivotal move back in 2011, the Dallas Cowboys altered their draft strategy by selecting an offensive lineman in the first round, a departure from their previous approach since Jerry Jones acquired the team in 1989. The selection of Smith at No. 9 overall from USC marked a shift, and he went on to establish himself as one of the premier left tackles in the league over the next 13 years. However, concerns over his durability led to his departure to the New York Jets, with his guaranteed salary of just $6.5 million sparking discontent among Cowboys fans.
Looking ahead to the 2024 NFL Draft, there’s potential for several offensive linemen to step into starting roles. Options include moving Tyler Smith to left tackle and promoting T.J. Bass to left guard, or possibly re-signing La’el Collins, who spent time on the practice squad last season.
Before making any decisions, the Cowboys need a reliable contingency plan. This could involve pursuing an external free agent or turning to Chuma Edoga.
Edoga, signed as a swing tackle in 2023, showcased versatility by starting six games at both tackle and guard positions. While not on par with Smith, Edoga proved himself capable without being a significant liability. Re-signing him would be a prudent move for the Cowboys as they navigate their offensive line situation.
Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback
The re-signing of Jourdan Lewis raised questions about Stephon Gilmore’s future with the team. Gilmore arrived via trade with the Indianapolis Colts and assumed the CB1 role following Trevon Diggs’ season-ending ACL injury.
At 33 years old, Gilmore may not be the same player he once was, but he remained a reliable contributor, appearing in all 17 games and tallying impressive stats, including 68 tackles, 13 pass defenses, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. His performance, notably in containing the Philadelphia Eagles’ passing game in Week 14, underscored his value to the team.
While the Cowboys possess promising talents like Diggs and Daron Bland, who led the league in interceptions in 2023, and Lewis, who excelled as a slot corner, depth remains a concern. Gilmore’s return would provide stability to the secondary, allowing the team to focus their draft assets on other areas of need. With Gilmore expressing his desire to return, the ball is now in the Cowboys’ court to make it happen.
