Former Reading FC Women’s manager, Kelly Chambers, recently shared her reflections on her tenure at the club, particularly highlighting the challenging financial circumstances she faced in her final years.

Chambers, who had a longstanding association with the Royals spanning over two decades, initially as a player from 2007 to 2012 and later as a manager from 2015, offered insights into the struggles encountered due to financial constraints.

Despite consistently competing with top-tier clubs in the Women’s Super League for numerous seasons, Reading FC Women experienced relegation from the league during the 2022/23 season. This downturn in fortunes coincided with Chambers’ departure from the club in the following summer.

Presently serving as the sporting director with the Utah Royals, Chambers conveyed her deep-rooted concern for the club’s welfare during her time at Reading. She emphasized the emotional difficulty of witnessing the uncertain trajectory of the club amidst financial instability.

Chambers also highlighted instances of the club’s support for players, such as accommodating a player who became a parent, showcasing Reading FC’s commitment to their staff beyond the realm of sport.

In her conversation with BBC Radio Berkshire, Chambers’ sentiments underscored a blend of dedication to the club’s well-being and the personal challenges encountered amid tumultuous times.
