After securing outfielder Juan Soto with a groundbreaking $765 million deal, the New York Mets turn their attention to filling another crucial spot in their lineup. President of baseball operations David Stearns is now focused on acquiring a player to hit behind the 26-year-old star. The Mets must decide whether to re-sign homegrown first baseman Pete Alonso or trade him to acquire third baseman Alex Bregman.
Heading into the offseason, Alonso was a potential fit for several teams. However, rivals like the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, and Washington Nationals opted for other options. While the Mets are considered the “most obvious fit” for the right-handed slugger, negotiations remain stalled with a significant gap, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
Prediction: Alonso’s Return to Mets Likely with Six-Year, $156 Million Deal
With the Astros and Yankees securing their first base options in free agency, it’s now a battle between the Mets and San Francisco Giants for Pete Alonso, with a return to Queens looking increasingly likely. Baseball insider Kavner predicts a creative six-year, $156 million contract for the slugger, a deal that mirrors the seven-year, $158 million extension Alonso turned down in June 2023.
If Alonso stays with the Mets, he has a strong chance of becoming the club’s all-time home run leader by 2025. Having already hit 226 homers in his first six seasons—currently third in Mets history—Alonso would need to surpass two homegrown stars: David Wright (242 homers) and Darryl Strawberry (252 homers) to claim the top spot.
